The President of Russia, Vladimir Putinsigned a decree to honor the American actor, Steven Seagal, with the Order of Friendshipaccording to the official Russian legal information portal.
The award is granted to the interpreter, who received Russian citizenship in 2016for his “great contribution” to “international cultural and humanitarian” cooperation, says the text of the decree without offering further details.
Two years after receiving Russian citizenship, Seagal became special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry for matters of cooperation in the fields of culture and art.
The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, received Seagal on February 17, after which they both highlighted the importance of conserving “non-governmental contacts” in the midst of the confrontations that worsen in the world.
Seagal was a staunch supporter of the Russian annexation of the Ukrainian region of Crimea in 2014, and last year he visited Olenivka, a Russian-occupied Ukrainian town where dozens of prisoners of war Ukrainians were massacred in an attack for which Russia and Ukraine blame each other.
