Yair Lapid congratulated Benjamin Netanyahu on his victory in Tuesday’s elections in Israel and informed him that he has begun preparations for the transfer of command, thus accepting his electoral defeat.

“Prime Minister Lapid congratulated opposition leader Netanyahu on his election victory and informed him that He has instructed his entire office to prepare an orderly handover.”The president’s office announced in a statement.

“The State of Israel is above any political consideration. I wish Netanyahu success, for the good of the people of Israel and the State of Israel,” Lapid said.

With this message, the Prime Minister acknowledges the defeat of his party, Yesh Atidand the bloc of parties that he heads, against the one commanded by Netanyahu.

With 98% of the votes counted, the block that supports the former president has 64 deputies out of a total of 120, and thus obtains the majority necessary to form the Executive.

Netanyahu’s Likud, which won the elections and would obtain 31 seats, would integrate the government together with the far-right Religious Zionist Party (14 seats) and the ultra-Orthodox Shas (11 seats) and United Torah Judaism (8 seats).

Israeli media, citing political sources, said the new government could be closed by the middle of the month. Previous coalitions in recent years have had narrower parliamentary majorities that made them vulnerable to no-confidence motions.

Although these numbers are not yet final and the final result would only be announced tomorrow, this Thursday it was confirmed that the leftist Meretz party has no chance of reaching the number of votes necessary to enter Parliament, for which significant changes are ruled out in the allocation of seats.

The leader of Meretz, Zehava Gallonsaid today that the results of his party are “a disaster for the country” and warned about the racist component of the coalition that Netanyahu would form.

Another formation that has already been officially out of Parliament is the Arab nationalist party Balad.

After the presentation of the final ballot, the country’s president, isaac herzogIn the next few days, he will receive the leaders of the parties with parliamentary representation so that they can recommend a candidate for the position of prime minister.

Netanyahu is expected to easily reach the minimum majority of 61 recommendations and receive the mandate to form a government.

In that instance, the formal negotiation with its potential coalition partners would begin, especially with regard to the assignment of ministerial portfolios, prior to the announcement of the new Executive.

In this way, after five elections in less than four years, Israel would emerge from the political paralysis it has faced since 2018 and Netanyahu would regain power after just over a year as leader of the opposition.
