Upon the return of the Mexican soccer team to Mexico City on Sunday morning, some fans expressed insults and complaints to the Argentine coach. Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino for the elimination of ‘Tri’ in the group stage of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
“You just came to steal ‘Tata’, it’s the only thing you came to do”, a fan told Martino when he was found in the arrivals area of the Mexico City International Airport.
As he walked to leave the air terminal in the midst of reporters, photographers and cameramen, the ‘Tata’ was called “Mexico’s biggest mockery. The biggest thief of all.”
The Argentine coach, who ended his contract as Mexico coach with the elimination of the World Cup, was reproached for having relegated striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, the ‘Tri’s’ all-time top scorer, during the last three years of his management.
“There are the consequences of not calling the ‘Chicharo'”, they claimed as an argument for the only two goals that Mexico scored in the group stage of the World Cup. “So much so that you were told and you clung to (Rogelio) Funes Mori.”
The members of the coaching staff of ‘Tata’ Martino came out to protect him from the siege of the cameras. “Enough, how many photos are they going to take? 200 photos?” reproached the assistant Sergio Giovagnoli.
A fan who complained to the coach accused Norberto Scoponi, another of Martino’s assistants, of having hit him in the face “with the palm of his hand fully extended on two or three occasions.”
Gerardo Martino kept his pace without making any statements until he left the airport and boarded a vehicle.
In Qatar 2022, the Mexican National Team broke a chain of seven consecutive qualifications to the round of 16 of a World Cup; El Tri’s previous elimination in the group stage had been in Argentina-1978.
